I bought the ElmScan 5 USB as an alternative to using one of those handheld scanners. For about the same price, you get (with ElmScan) the ability to review and clear codes as well as being able to monitor a number of real-time parameters with your running engine. Handheld scanners in this price range don't have this latter function. Well done [...]

My wife has had the check engine light continuously on in her Honda Accord for the last 6 months. I didn't take quick action because the engine sounded fine and there has been no drop in performance. Recently, the check engine light came on in my Toyota 4Runner. Since we now have this problem in both of our vehicles, I decided it was time to buy a vehicle On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) scanner. We decided to go this route because we heard many auto repair shops charge anywhere from $50-$100 to perform a vehicle diagnostic scan.
I researched several ODB scanning solutions, and decided I wanted a tool that had a lot of flexibility and was very easy-to-use. Specifically, I was looking for a solution that I could connect to my notebook computer and operate it from a Graphical User Interface (GUI) from the notebook. I also wanted the capability to be able to capture diagnostic trend data and be able to analyze it in other software tools.
I ended up choosing the ElmScan 5 USB Scan tool and have been very pleased with this purchase. First of all ScanTool.net (the seller) shipped my item in less than 24 after receiving my order. The item arrived within a few days, was well packaged, and came with decent installation instructions. It only took me about a total 10 minutes to get the ElmScan working and providing me with error code "P0401: Insufficient flow in the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. I "Googled" step-by-step instructions on how to resolve the problem, and it appears to be now corrected. I didn't get the opportunity to use this device on my 4Runner because its "Check Engine" light went out. NOTE: the 4Runner's problem was probably a loose gas cap, which I learned was a common problem from a Google query.
Another great feature of the ElmScan 5 is it can be used with lots of 3rd-party vehicle diagnostic software as well as G-Net Gigital dashboard, which is a solution for those who want to install a high-end touch-screen PC/Navigation system into their vehicle.
Bottom line, I'm very pleased with my ElmScan 5 USB thus far and believe the product offers great value for the price. If you decide to purchase this product, make sure it's the model that supports the Universal Serial Bus (USB). Virtually all notebook computers have USB ports, but few have the legacy COM ports.
