The Impetus
Purchased to capture a Check Engine Light (CEL) event that occurs randomly.
I had been experiencing rough engine running at odd occasions while driving or on random days. The CEL would light and hold til the end of the trip but after shutting down and plugging in the other scanner that I own the error codes would have already cleared. I never took it into a shop because if I can't read it then how are they... and believe me they will charge you anyway, tell you it's fine now, and write it up in the books as "USER ERROR"
The very first day I got the CarChip and plugged it in - the CEL light fired up and I GOT IT ON THE CARCHIP!!!!!! Come to find out: not only does it read the code for me but it tells me what the code means (other scanner doesn't) tells me when it happend, how fast I was going, time of day, engine temp, o2 sensor voltage, rpm and what vehicle I was in!!!!!
And you can reset the CEL light, log all the miles you drive, assign the trips to personal, business, commute or other, the software creates myriads of reports for you, etc. etc. etc.
ALL FOR <$100.

CarChip Pro is easy to install in the car (assuming you can find the OBD connector) and the software for retrieving the data and configuring the device worked well. I like that the stored data can be exported to files that can easily be read by programs like Excel. Only criticism is that the stored data records are only identified by elapsed time, not clock time, so you have to refer to the file headers to know when the data was recorded.

This is a handy little device, it records a lot of documentaion about your car while it is running. Best part is I can now turn off the check engine soon lite, and also find out what the code means.

It plugs into the standard port (right under the steering wheel in Passat'99).
you can set up to 5 parameters to monitor at a time.
It beeps when you exceed the set threshold: speed or breaking power.
you can review and organize your trips on PC; the software even allows you to organize fuel spending.
Not sure if the record is admissible in the court but it is something you can present to support your argument.
