 Great except for the timer July 28, 2010

This is adorable and the sounds are very comforting for my colicky baby. I have one complaint though, the longest timer is 45 minutes and there is no constant on setting. As soon as it shuts off, my baby wakes up. Also just a warning if you wash it, don't put it in the dryer or the hair will get ruined.

We have an 8-week-old boy who prefers sleeping on mom or dad to his co-sleeper. This was great when he was a newborn, but as he has gotten older he needs to stretch out and sleep in his own space. When he sleeps on his own, though, he wakes up quite frequently and interrupts everyone's rest--this toy has solved the problem, literally overnight! We introduced the giraffe just before bedtime, when he was still alert but peaceful. He was very interested and stared at it for a while before reaching out to touch. Then, as he got sleepy and we put him in his co-sleeper, we tried the different sounds. The rainfall seemed to work the best to lull him to sleep and, thanks to the 45-minute setting, Mom fell asleep, too! I reset the sound to play again each time he finished nursing throughout the night. Last night, he woke up the fewest times ever AND slept for the longest stretch ever. I know that our baby is getting enough nutrition at every feeding that he can start sleeping for longer stretches, but I'm not ready for sleep training yet, if ever. Hopefully, with a little help from Gentle Giraffe, we can let our son learn to sleep on his own schedule, in his own rhythm.
The only irksome thing is the packaging. The soft neck of the giraffe was wired to a piece of cardboard in the box and by the time I got the toy out of the box (not easy, required more force than I expected), the giraffe looked like it had been garrotted. Not good! I think I was able to half-way fix it by massaging the stuffing above and below the area where the wire had been located, and hopefully it won't look like a broken neck over time.

Once I figured out how to assemble the musical insert, this toy made for a great addition to my little boys' room. The noises/songs it plays are soothing and seem to help them get to sleep easier. My complaint is that the musical piece that goes inside the giraffe was next to impossible to figure out how to insert.

We purchased this giraffe for our 6 month old son, but it's become a favorite of everyone in the family when we're sleeping away from home. All of our children are used to sleeping with a fan on in their bedrooms for "white noise." It's not always practical to carry a fan with us when traveling, so this giraffe has come in very handy! At our last overnight hotel stay, we attached the giraffe to the baby's portable crib and put it on the white noise setting. Our toddler was in a portable crib near by and the giraffe soothed them both to sleep with no "away from home" bed time troubles. When it was time for everyone else to go to bed, we again turned on the giraffe and it nicely blocked out the noises from the parking lot outside and any noises from the hallway. We're planning another night away and the giraffe is at the top of our packing list!
