Amazon.com The delightful sitcom The Big Bang Theory revolves around a character type rarely seen on television: The alpha geek. Physicists Leonard (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon (Jim Parsons) get their lives shaken up when an attractive young woman named Penny (Kaley Cuoco) moves in to the apartment across from theirs. The key to the show, though, is not that they both fall haplessly in love--Leonard does, but Sheldon remains impermeably aloof and caustic about anything resembling romance or human relationships in general. While the push and pull of Leonard's yearning for Penny motivates much of the series' ongoing plot, the show's real drive comes from Sheldon's fantastic combination of obsessive-compulsive neurosis and grandiose obliviousness. He's a brilliant comic creation, imperious and dorky, a seamless collaboration of clever writing and an inspired performance by Parsons. Whether Sheldon loses his job for insulting his new boss, or finds his ego bruised by a child prodigy, or finds himself unable to bear being part of a lie that Leonard has told, he attacks the world with a relentless need to assert his supremacy--and the results are deeply funny. The triumph of The Big Bang Theory is that everyone is written with genuine affection; what could have been a lifeless parade of stereotypes--Two Nerds and a Hot Chick--becomes instead a charming collision of cultures. The familiar stuff (computer games, comic books, social incompetence) has the grit of specificity; the show understands the difference between Halo and Halo 3, knows what the Bottle City of Kandor is, and grasps the infinite variety of ways in which a conversation can go terribly awry. (Penny gets less nuance, but Cuoco still gives her a distinctive personality.) Kudos as well to supporting players Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, who bring their own variations on geekiness to the table, and to great appearances by some of Galecki's former cohorts on Roseanne--Sara Gilbert as geekette Leslie and Laurie Metcalf as Sheldon's fundamentalist mother. All in all, one of the most winning sitcoms in years. --Bret Fetzer

A Great Show January 6, 2009 Rev V (Mocksville, NC) This show is hilarious and contrary to popular belief you do not have to have a PhD in physics to get all the intellectual humor. Shelton and Leonard are the funniest comedy team since Andy and Barney. This is a must see series
Fantastic January 6, 2009 Mincus This show is simply one of the best I have ever seen. I'm surprised that it's not more popular. As soon as the second season comes out, I will be buying that one too.
The best show on TV January 6, 2009 A student This is, without a doubt, my favorite show currently on television.
And quite possibly, my favorite show of all time.
Certainly it is hard to think of an ensemble cast that worked so naturally from the pilot on. Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, and Jim Parsons turn in stellar performances like they've been rehearsing their whole lives for these roles - and Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar brilliantly steal the stage in what otherwise might only have been a "sidekick" role with most other actors.
Sara Gilbert doesn't officially complete the ensemble until the second season, but also flawlessly executes her role as the "girl geek" in 2 episodes of the first season.
Anyone who has ever worked with a physicist, met a physicist, spoken to a physicist, or been in the general vicinity of a physicist (or other science & engineering type) would immediately recognize that these are superb composite characters of many such people - for the most part, they are really "like that"!
You'll fall in love watching these fun-loving, slightly socially-awkward geniuses and their under-the-radar neighbor. You get drawn in by the idea of one of these total nerds going out with the beautiful blonde next door, but you soon find out that there may be a lot more to these guys then equations and video games - and that the blonde is a lot smarter then she might seem at first!
I beleive in The Big Bang December 31, 2008 M. Simpson (Ogden, UT) I happened upon this show by luck as I was mindlessly flipping through channels one day, and I have been hooked on it ever since. Sadly, I found it halfway through Season 1, so when it came out on dvd I was beyond thrilled to have gotten it for Christmas. This show is, in my opinion, the funniest comedy to come around in a long time. I have never seen an episode that hasn't made me burst into tears from fits of laughter. And now that I've got the first season on dvd, I can watch my favorite moments any time I want, as many times as I want (and I admit there are some scenes I can't get enough of)---and I still fall off the couch laughing. The characters are perfectly cast, and are both annoying and lovable at the same time. The only negative thing I can think of about this show is that the episodes are only a half hour. I recomend this show to anyone!
The best TV show I've ever seen December 30, 2008 Chicken Kiev (Shreveport, LA USA) I've never seen a TV show as funny and original as this one. It's way funnier than "Seinfield", "Friends", "ELR" and "The IT Crowd", which were my favs before I saw "The Big Bang Theory".
