Never leave home without it December 4, 2008 Yumi (United States) I have had my Kindle for over a month now. Fortunately my finance ordered it a few days before Oprah announced it as her favorite thing so it came in time for my birthday.
I had read through many of the reviews, weighing the good and the bad before I had even seen one. Most of the complaints are valid. There is a flash and a bit of delay when turning the page. It is a little awkward at first until you figure out how to hold the Kindle without accidentally pressing the next page button. But those are minor flaws compared to what it can do!
I am not a lazy person by any means but I love that I don't have to get out of bed and go downstairs (especially now that's it's below freezing out) to get my paper. I wake up, turn on my Kindle, and my New York Times downloads. And it is so easy to search for a keyword if I am looking for a particular article but I can't remember which issue it was in! I can preview a book to see if I even want to read it, without having to go to a bookstore or library.
I no longer have to carry around a dictionary. The pocket ones were always too simple and it was ridiculous to even consider bringing along anything larger. I always carry a book in my bag, almost anywhere I go. I read while waiting in long lines, I read at the movie theater before the movie starts, I read at work when I have some down time. And I am usually reading two or three books at a time. And now they are compactly stored in my Kindle!
I admit I am a bit of a technogeek but I am also a bibliophile. I love the feel of books, I love making notes in the margins, underlining important phrases, and most of all, I love sharing my books with other people, which you cannot really do on the Kindle. So I am keeping all of my books, I still go to the library on a biweekly basis and I still continue to buy more books, to my future husband's dismay. (There is no more room for bookshelves!) But the Kindle is my PORTABLE book reader. I can take it with me anywhere. I can take along as many books as I like when I travel, without having to pack an extra suitcase. I personally don't think it will replace books for those of us who love them and are obsessed with them. But it is a great piece of technology for those of us who love to read and welcome any medium that allows it.
Do not buy if you live in Canada December 4, 2008 S. Kuhar (Calgary, AB Canada) 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
A girlfriend of mine had this item shipped to a friend in the States, brought it back to Canada, and then realized she couldn't download any books unless she could pay with a US credit card. (Oddly enough, they were able to detect that her credit card came from Canada)
So, she sadly had to ship it back to the States, and then her friend had to ship it back to Amazon.
I'm not sure what the logistics are or why you're not able to use this item in Canada, but Amazon is just shooting themselves in the foot by limiting their customers to just the US.
Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, does it?
Love my Kindle December 4, 2008 Pewter (Princeton, NJ) I truly love my Kindle. It is so easy to use. I get so engrossed in reading that I hate to put it down. One of its best features is the dictionary. The Kindle is just great for travelling.
Love it!...but... December 4, 2008 tinylittlebunnies (New York, NY United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the kind of thing I've been waiting for in terms of reading convenience and quick delivery of content. I waited until there were enough titles that I wanted, and even though the recent price drop was small, it was probably what finally made me cave and spend the $$. Also love it because I've run out of bookshelf space in my apartment, even having already pared down as much as I could. It doesn't compare to an actual book but it really doesn't need to, it really has it's own place for people who love to read and already read in all sort of formats. I've tried reading in bed with my laptop, or using reading apps on the itouch but this device is light years better - just the right size, heft and brightness. However, I gotta say... it's ugly. It's hide-it-from-people ugly. Giant 70's calculators looked better. Compared to my other electronics (mac, ps3, itouch, blkberry, etc.) it's absolutely awful to look at. I can't help but love it though - it if wasn't so fugly, it'd be perfect.
Kindle: Wonderful Electronic Book December 4, 2008 Lawrence Weirick (Cedar Crest, New Mexico USA) I purchased a unit for my wife and one for myself after seeing and getting a discount through the Oprah Winfrey show. I absolutely love mine. The best feature for me (at age 67 and a contact wearer) is the ability to increase the font size which is especially important in dimmer light situations such as in bed. The ease of using a reading light and hitting an advance button and NOT turning pages is also very convenient. One aspect I don't like is the leather cover which is necessary to attach the reading light. It does not want to contain the Kindle very securely. I prefer holding the Kindle without it.
