Amazon.com essential recording Though they've worked with plenty of accompaniment, the heart of Everything but the Girl's music has always been simple: a voice (usually Tracy Thorn's), a simple melody, and enough emotion to keep Kleenex in business for decades. On Acoustic, Thorn and Ben Watt strip things down to the bone, and the starkness makes the music even more affecting than usual. Of course, it doesn't hurt that the material they've chosen to work with is pretty affecting to begin with. The five covers are fantastic (Mickey and Sylvia's "Love Is Strange," Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher Than the Rest," Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," Elvis Costello's "Allison," and Tom Waits's "Downtown Train"), but the five originals, all of which appear on other EBTG albums, hold their own; and three of them--"Driving," "Apron Strings," and "Me and Bobby D"--do much more that that. --Randy Silver
Amazon.com Taking the unplugged route, this duo is a contemplative mood that will please fans alienated by the overproduced blue-eyed soul they've turned in on earlier releases. Here they augment an EP's worth of contemporary standards ("Time After Time and "Alison, included) with spartan versions of their own superb originals. "Easy listening with an edge. --Jeff Bateman

My favorite CD March 13, 2010 E. Wagner (Long Beach, CA) LOVE this acoustic album from Everything But the Girl. Never did care too much for their pop tunes but instantly fell in love with the sound of the covers on this album!
Heartachingly beautiful January 3, 2009 doctormanny (Pittsburgh, PA) As the title suggests, "Acoustic" is a stripped down collection of songs by Everything But The Girl. The first five songs are covers, the last six are originals--all of them are heartachingly beautiful. The sparse musical arrangements and understated vocals, including some bittersweet harmonies, allow the emotional poignancy of the songs to stand out. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite. This CD is a pure gem. Highly recommended.
Music for a Lifetime October 28, 2007 Robert Atkinson (USA and China) This was my introduction to EBTG, so maybe I'm biased. But, I think this is the CD that gets to the core of what they are about. Many of their great songs are here, and offered up in such a relaxed and engaging way that its almost always right to listen to--except maybe when you just really gotta rock out.
music at its best July 19, 2007 M. Christensen (indiana, USA) True talent is hard to find, but EBTG has it. This acoustic version is one of my all time favorites. It's my "unwind" and "destress" music. Their other stuff is OK, actually pretty good, but this acoustic cd tops them all and then some.
Great c.d. March 30, 2007 Budget I love every song (but one) on this c.d. (which is rare). Mine was stolen, I'm so happy to find it (and for cheap).
