Fans of Willy Porter, Ben Harper, and G. Love will all want to check out Jack Johnson's engaging folk- and blues-inflected pop. Born in Oahu, Hawaii, Johnson, a former surfer and film-school graduate, has a knack for acoustic ballads whose calm surfaces hide a subtle but strong lyrical undertow. "It seems to me that 'maybe' pretty much always means 'no,'" sings Johnson on "Flake," which features crony Harper on slide guitar. Production by J.P. Plunier (who also handles Harper's recordings) is simple and uncluttered: acoustic guitar and drum tracks share the foreground with Johnson's easygoing vocals, which evoke everyone from G. Love (who recorded Johnson's "Rodeo Clowns" on his Philadelphonic album) to Nick Drake to Willy Porter. And while Johnson may not have Porter's guitar chops, these songs have a relaxed beauty and understated depth that reward repeated listening. --Bill Forman

5 out of 5 stars Easy, laid-back music ..   July 29, 2010
K. Mee (Philadelphia, PA United States)
I really enjoyed this c.d. I was familiar with only 2 or 3 songs but after listening to the whole c.d., I think it's great. It's perfect
summertime music, reminding you of flip flops, ocean, beach and lazy, slow days. I like the steel drum sound in "Flake". The whole c.d. reminds me of a day at the beach. I will definitely check out more of Jack Johnson's music.

5 out of 5 stars Best Album he's made   June 1, 2010
Candace Weaver (Morgantown, WV)
I have every album he has made plus a few others that he guest stars on. Today I got "To the sea" and it made me realize how much I appreciate "Brushfire Fairytales". He show cases everything in this CD from his great solos, to his acoustic guitar, to his amazing lyrics. If you want to get a taste of Jack before the hype pick this CD up and you won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Astounding in every way!   April 2, 2009

No only do I love Jack Johnson's music, the mastering is phenomenal. If you have the audiophile gear to really appreciate the post production work, this is a must have CD. It is my number one choice for demo-ing my music room's system to friends, family and the like. To just see their expressions is such a treat. Jack is not just playing - he's right there with you. Fantastic work!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Peaceful   January 14, 2009
Christi Whorton
Jack Johnson writes songs that are laid back with a jazz and blues feel mixed in to provide songs that are easy to just relax to.

Understated playing which let's the songs breath with good lyrics and a playfulness. Towards the end of Fortunate Fool you can hear Johnson provide a musical nod (and a grin it seems) to another song.

Sit down on the couch, lower the lights and just listen.
